How the hard drive works
Hard drives are also know as a hard disk and are often abbreviated to HDD. Hard drives were invented a long time ago but their technology and ability are still very clever and complex. Inside the casing of a hard drive is a metal disk called a platter. On this platter is a highly polished magnetic medium. This medium is similar to a cassette or VHS tape, in its technology and ability to hold data. Above the disk an arm moves a head around. The head reads and writes all the data in the hard drive. The arm can move up and down the disk as much as 50 times a second. The disk will normally be spinning very fast at 5,400 RPM.
Symptoms of a faulty hard drive
There are many symptoms to a faulty hard drive one of the most common is the laptop just pausing and freezing.
You may get blue screens (BSOD).
You may get error messages such as – Unable to read disk – PXE media test failure.
Sometimes the laptop will show random behaviour.
You laptop may boot in to the check disk utillity.
You may hear grinding, clicking noises from inside your laptop.
Causes?
As you can read above, hard drives work very hard, the spinning and moving parts inside them are very delicate. What actually causes most hard drive failures is when the head crashes onto the disk, this will ruin the magnetic media and will corrupt the data. This can simply be caused by moving the laptop around when its on, the hard drive gets too hot, or irregular power to the hard drive caused by faulty power leads or DC Jacks.
How long will the replacement or repair take?
Diagnosis is normally done on the same day. The required repair will often be done the next day. Data recovery can be a long process and can slow this repair down.
